Agenda

  1. Preliminaries: introductions, agenda review, notes from the previous meeting, and announcements (5 min)
    .
  2. Planning of the Feb IT Policy Forum (50 min)
    Tentative Topic is: Shaping the Future of IT Policy
    .
    The tentative topic was postponed from November. It's a good, timely topic, but we could also consider if there is any other topic that is more time critical.
    .
    Other possible topics include (in no particular order):
    • Digital Accessibility (revision, will probably be in the process of drafting a proposal)
    • Encryption (revision, could be a discussion of implementation alternatives, which is the hard part about developing encryption policy) DELAY
    • Data Loss Prevention (revision, formerly known as Restricted Data Security Management, a.k.a Data Discovery – yes, we are on our third name for this! – could be a discussion that expands upon the UW-MIST discussion in October.)
    • Privileged Account Management (new, status TBD)
    • Vulnerability Management (revision, expansion of Electronic Devices Policy and Vulnerability Scanning Policy, status TBD)
    • IT Credentials (new, will have a draft policy by that time, currently scheduled to go to the ITC on Feb 21)
    • IT Asset Inventory Management (new, will have a draft policy by that time, scheduled to go the ITC on Mar 20)
    • Endpoint Management and Security (new, will have a draft proposal by that time, currently scheduled to go to the ITC on Apr 17)

      Action:
      • Decided that Encryption policy revision was not ready for a February forum, and that encryption implementation details would be better discussed in some other context than a policy forum.
      • The others listed above are possible, provided that they are in a state where they can benefit from a forum discussion.
      • Alternatively, tnstead of addressed a specific policy in February, here are two possible approaches to obtaining more general feedback on policy development priorities and the mix of policies:
        1. In February, present two concrete policies which are timely and relevant, followed by a policy needs assessment with the group;
          then i
          n April, take this feedback and apply to existing polices.
        2. In February, do a forum seeking feedback on existing policies;
          then in April, do conceptual framework and policy needs assessment,
          (i.e. approximately the reverse of option (a))
      • Assignment: Think about the options between now and the December Policy Communications meeting.
        .
  3. Next meeting
    • Continue discussing topic and/or arrangement for February Forum (for Dec meeting)
    • What other communications activities, (besides the forums,) should we be working on in the next few months? (Dec and/or Jan meeting)
    • Finish discussing topic for February Forum. (for Jan meeting)

  2. Everyone present who wants to speak on a topic must have a chance to speak.
  3. Attend more often than not, and review materials when you can't attend.
  4. Don't be shy, or worry about perception of an idea - we need open borders for these discussions.
  5. Let's park side issues or extensive detail for future work by this team, or others.
